The harmonium is a keyboard instrument that produces sound when air flows over metal reeds. Invented in Europe in the early 19th century, it became an essential instrument in classical music, devotional singing, and folk traditions.
Unlike the piano, the harmonium creates a sustained, droning tone that blends beautifully with vocals. The instrument is operated by pumping bellows with one hand while playing the keyboard with the other—a technique that gives the musician intimate control over dynamics and expression.
Our web harmonium faithfully recreates these warm, resonant tones using high-quality samples and the Web Audio API. No installation, no plugins — just authentic harmonium sound directly in your browser.
Anatomy of a Harmonium
Metal Reeds
Brass or steel reeds vibrate when air passes over them, creating the distinctive harmonium tone.
Keyboard
Typically 3.5 octaves of piano-style keys that control air flow to specific reeds.
Bellows
Hand-pumped bellows provide the air pressure needed to sustain notes.
Stops & Drones
Stops control airflow to different reed banks; drones add sustained bass notes.

Web harmonium — frequently asked questions
What is a web harmonium?
A web harmonium is a browser-based virtual instrument that simulates the sound and playability of a real harmonium. Using the Web Audio API, it reproduces authentic harmonium tones that you can play using your computer keyboard or by clicking the on-screen keys. No downloads or installations required.
Is this online harmonium free to use?
Yes, our web harmonium is completely free with no hidden costs, subscriptions, or premium features locked behind paywalls. We believe everyone should have access to musical instruments regardless of their budget.
Does the virtual harmonium work on mobile devices?
Yes, the web harmonium works on tablets and smartphones. On touch devices, you can tap the on-screen keyboard to play notes. For the best experience with full keyboard mapping, we recommend using a desktop or laptop computer.
How realistic is the harmonium sound?
Our web harmonium uses high-quality audio samples recorded from a real harmonium. The sound includes the characteristic warmth and sustain of actual harmonium reeds. While no digital instrument can perfectly replicate the physical experience, our virtual harmonium comes remarkably close.
Can I use this harmonium for classical music practice?
Absolutely. The web harmonium is perfect for practicing ragas, scales, and vocal exercises. The transpose feature allows you to shift the pitch to match your vocal range, and the reverb adds a natural ambiance that enhances practice sessions.
What browsers support the web harmonium?
Our online harmonium works in all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. It uses the Web Audio API, which is supported by all major browsers released in the last several years.
About this online harmonium project
This free web harmonium was built to make a traditionally expensive instrument accessible to everyone. A quality physical harmonium costs $300–$2,000 and weighs 5–15 kg. We wanted to remove that barrier.
Under the hood, the instrument uses the Web Audio API to decode and play back samples recorded from a real harmonium. The audio engine handles real-time pitch transposition via detuning, convolution-based reverb using an impulse response file, and polyphonic reed stacking — all running at 44.1 kHz in your browser.
Whether you're a vocalist warming up before a performance, a student learning classical ragas, or someone looking for a meditative drone, this virtual harmonium offers an accessible, zero-cost entry point.
Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart.
